TO A CELEBRATION OF A SURFING ICON
Surfing events were a part of a week long celebration...various events, booths and sports sales..

that were displayed for all tourist and
local folks to enjoy and learn more...

The Duke is the legend of Hawaii's ocean sports...a
champion swimmer and surfer...Born in 1890, he
was 3 years older than my dad...I keep looking for
pictures of my dad in the old Hawaii prints that are
hanging in the hotels and other public places...I
know my dad had to surf Waikiki at the same
time...no doubt shared the same surf...My Dad was
a San Diego beach boy...during the part of the year
that he could escape from his engineering job.
These were the years of his free spirit, before he
married and had to take on a different role in life.
The Duke represented the US many years in the
Olympics...my childhood swim coach, Florence
Chambers, must have shared a berth, as she was a
backstroke swimmer in the early 1920's Olympics in
You can "GOOGLE" the Duke, surfing Hawaii and
the olymics...there is just so much information
available for those that want to know more about
the history, and the man...
But unless you were able to be there, you can
enjoy a few pictures that I took in August...
