| The process of creating Copper Enameled Jewelry - copper is cleaned with acid to remove any oil -1st firing with base coat of powdered glass, which if finer than sugar or salt. -Piece cleaned each time it is removed from the kiln, as it has ash on the copper underside (each piece is fired 4 + times, usually 6 or 7) -There are multiple layers of base glass coats and then the designs are made with glass chunks that melt, liquid glass that forms designs by crackling, and painting with an oil based glass paint -back is cleaned and sprayed with a lacquer finish, and jewelry findings are attached -the process is labor intensive, but the unique designs are worth it...the artist has very little control of the design once it is placed in the kiln... no two pieces are alike, as the heat is the artist once the piece in the kiln |
